Day 30 – Cut

So many meanings and applications.
It all begins with that first cut,
when we enter this world,
and our connection
with our mother is CUT off

A paper cut always catches us by surprise –
cutting out stars from golden paper,
that will twinkle in the candles lit on the tree,
and gently dance in the warm air
circulating the room.

The cuts and pains jealousy creates –
unwanted,ugly, in your heart.
Uneasily, it brings back memories
of the sibling who always got
the love without asking for it.

Cutting dead flowers –
deadheading to promote new growth,
pruning the cherry tree
for next year’s crop,
forcing the cut branches to bloom by Christmas.

Words are cutting off an argument –
replaced by a sudden smile,
they change emotions,
calm the seas,
but cannot be taken back.

My heart aches
as today marks our anniversary
and I remember the first argument
that cut into the soft flesh of our love,
now as tender as it was 37 years ago.

To cut – a process of severing
that even when you try to
reassemble the pieces,
try to glue together the seams,
will always leave a scar.
